Colchester United Narrowly Beaten by Peterborough United in Pre-Season Match
Colchester United suffered a 3-2 defeat to Peterborough United in their fifth pre-season match, with Jack Payne and Milton Oni scoring for the U's. The match was played at the JobServe Community stadium on Tuesday evening.
What Happened?
The U's were on the backfoot initially, after a ball from Bolu Shofowoke found former U's player Owura Edwards, who put it in at the back post to give Peterborough the lead after just eight minutes. Colchester then pushed on to find a equaliser, with the closest being a well-worked dribble by Bradley Ihionvein, but he saw his shot go just wide of the Peterborough goal.

The U's began the second half pushing forward, seeing Harry Anderson put a volley over the bar. However, the visitors came the closest to scoring as a free kick from Ben Woods was parried out by the U's trialist goalkeeper. Posh had another attempt at goal when Sam Kuffour's clearance landed by Harley Mills who put it just wide of the goal.
On the hour mark, Danny and Nicky Cowley made a total of nine changes, bringing a youthful U's side on from the bench. Peterborough continued to trouble Col U, as a long-distance strike from Harry Leonard saw our Trialist between the sticks spring into action to pull off a great double save to keep us level.
Posh took the lead through a penalty after the referee deemed there to be a holding offence in the box from a corner. Harry Leonard converted from the spot to give them the lead with 15 minutes to go. However, the U's soon equalised again as Kien Connolly picked the pocket of a Peterborough midfielder and played Oni through to curl an effort around Alex Bass.
However, it didn't last long as Peterborough found a winner late on with a long-range strike from Brandon Khela finding the bottom left-hand corner in the final minutes, securing the victory for the visitors in our first home pre-season tie.
