Milton Keynes Dons manager Paul Warne has described Peterborough United as 'really unlucky' this season ahead of their League One meeting this weekend. Both sides have taken just four points from their opening five games, with Peterborough sitting 20th and MK Dons one place above them in 19th.

Warne, whose side are also without a win, told reporters that the table does not reflect the quality of Darren Ferguson's team. "I like Darren, I’ve spoken to him a few times over the years, he’s one of the good guys," Warne said. "They’ve been really unlucky in their games. They’re a good team."

Warne's admiration

The MK Dons boss has a long-standing appreciation for Peterborough's approach, having previously tried to sign striker Sam Leonard, who joined from Blackburn. He also knows midfielder Liam Kelly well after the player's summer switch from Stadium MK to London Road. Kelly was named MK Dons' Player of the Year last season as they won promotion.

Warne said he texts Kelly regularly and wishes him well, but not on Saturday. "I get 'cotton-wool mouth' when playing against my old team," he admitted, referencing the nerves of facing former players. He insisted there is no chance his side will underestimate their opponents, predicting "it should be a really good game."

The current picture

Peterborough's recent form shows two wins, one draw and two defeats from their last five outings. Their last result was a 2-1 home defeat to league leaders Sheffield Wednesday on September 5th, a result that leaves them eight points off the top. They have scored three goals and conceded nine so far this campaign.

The immediate focus is on breaking their slow start at Stadium MK. Warne's comments provide an external validation of Peterborough's performances as they seek a first away win of the season against a direct rival in the lower reaches of the table.
