Peterborough United are raring to get going after an injury-hit end to last campaign. The Posh suffered badly in the final weeks of the last campaign without Johnston's ability to play. Johnston limped out of Posh's 2-1 defeat at Leyton Orient on March 14 with a damaged calf and missed the last ten games of the season. On Tuesday (June 9), the 24-year-old was among the group of contracted players who returned to the club's training ground for a series of fitness tests ahead of pre-season. Johnston is expected to compete with James Dornelly for the right-back role for the upcoming season after spending much of last season filling in at left-back. Posh have already secured the signing of another left-back on a free transfer. The player's identity has now been revealed but is heavily rumoured to be Evan Weir from Walsall. Speaking upon his return, Johnston said: 'I'm glad to be back, it was a long eight weeks at the end of the season while I was injured. I just wanted to be out there helping the team. It's a fresh start now though and we're looking forward. It was a crazy, crazy season. It was hard mentally but it was down to us players and we have to take responsibility. We are the ones who go onto the pitch and if things aren't right, it lies on us. Hopefully we can get ourselves together, get going and get ourselves pushing towards the top end of the table more. We will now have a clear six or seven weeks for the manager to get message across and games to try different things.
