Peterborough United defender Rio Adebisi is determined to resume his career after two years of severe injury setbacks, with the 25-year-old left-back having played just 14 minutes for the club. He has undergone two major knee surgeries since joining from Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2024, derailing his hopes of establishing himself at London Road.
A promising start cut short
Adebisi arrived with strong credentials, having been an ever-present for Crewe and helping them reach the 2024 League Two Play-Off Final. His pre-season with Peterborough was immediately disrupted by cartilage damage in his right knee, requiring an operation. He finally made his debut on December 20, 2024, coming off the bench in the 78th minute of a 2-1 defeat to Stockport County.
That brief appearance remains his only one for the club to date. Shortly after, he required a second, more complex procedure on his left knee which involved rotating his kneecap. The club's medical staff gave an initial recovery timeline of six to nine months following that surgery.
The daily grind of rehabilitation
"You want to come to a place and you are desperate to show people how good you are," Adebisi told Peterborough Today. "When I found out I needed surgery, that hurt me the most."
He described the isolating nature of a long-term rehabilitation, which has seen him spend countless hours alone in the gym while his teammates train. "All I want to do is play football," he said. "A lot of fans don’t know what goes on on a day-to-day basis. It is very lonely."
A history of resilience
This is not the first extended layoff of Adebisi's career. During his time at Crewe, he was sidelined for ten months with a foot injury that also required two operations. His recent progress has included running drills, as seen at Sincil Bank ahead of Peterborough's match against Lincoln City on January 4. However, the club has not set a definitive date for his return to full training or match action.
Context for a struggling side
Adebisi's absence is felt as Peterborough United seek stability in League One. The team currently sits 20th in the table with just 4 points from their opening five matches, having scored only 3 goals while conceding 9. Their recent form shows two wins, one draw, and two defeats from the last five outings. The latest result was a 2-1 home loss to Sheffield Wednesday on September 5, a game in which Brandon Woods scored for Posh.
The immediate focus turns to the next fixture, a home match against 22nd-placed Doncaster Rovers on September 19. Fans can check the full schedule on the club's fixtures page. While the defensive options are assessed, the latest team news and availability is always tracked on the official squad list.
For Rio Adebisi, the fight continues away from the pitch, with the sole aim of finally pulling on a Peterborough United shirt again.
