Ex-Peterborough United footballer Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has been to court over an accusation of assaulting his wife. The player, aged 34, went to Cannock Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 11 using crutches, facing a single charge of assault by beating connected to an event at his home in Staffordshire during June.
During the proceedings, Mendez-Laing only gave his name, where he lives, and his birth date. The judge, Joseph O’Connor, allowed the former athlete conditional bail, and a trial has been arranged for January. The charge came after claims that his wife Saira was struck on the head and hurt her arm following a disagreement about a telephone.
Posh playing days
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was a player for Peterborough United for a period of three years from 2012 to 2015. He played 60 times for the team and scored six times. An injury meant he was not expected to play against his former club in the upcoming Saturday match.
Current Posh context
Peterborough United are concentrating on moving up the table, as they are placed 21st in League One having earned five points from their first six matches. Their next game is at their home ground versus Doncaster on September 19, which they will consider an important chance to move up the standings.
