Grant McCann has stressed the urgent need for Peterborough United to start winning games, despite his confidence in the club's long-term future. The Posh sit 21st in League One with just five points from six matches and are still searching for their first victory of the campaign after nine games in all competitions.

McCann pointed to the recent 3-3 draw with Barnsley as evidence of the team's attacking potential but also its defensive fragility. "I feel like we're playing some good football, we're creating a lot of opportunities," the manager said. Over the last five games, his side has generated numerous chances but failed to convert enough of them, a pattern he knows must change. "Football is about being ruthless in both boxes," McCann added, referencing a past game where Wimbledon had 22 shots.

Youth development praised

The manager did highlight positive foundations being laid at the club. Youngsters Leon Ayinde and Sean Grehan have both received Republic of Ireland under-21 call-ups. "We feel like they have got a massive part to play in this football club for years to come," McCann stated. He mentioned other young players with significant potential and referenced the club's desire for sustainability through future player sales.

However, McCann was clear that this promising future cannot come at the expense of the present. He stressed the importance of blending that youth with older, experienced players to get results now. The immediate challenge is a home fixture against Doncaster Rovers, who are 24th and also without a win this season. The last meeting between the sides ended in a 2-1 defeat for Peterborough last November.

Injury updates ahead of Doncaster

McCann provided several squad updates ahead of the key match. Defender Matty Pearson is ruled out for ten to 12 weeks with a hamstring tear, a significant blow. Midfielder Harry Clifton has undergone a double hernia operation but is not expected to be sidelined beyond the weekend. Full-back Tom Nixon is back in training, while Jamie Sterry is unlikely to be risked.

With the team creating chances but conceding too many-they have let in 10 goals in six league games-finding that ruthlessness McCann demands is the immediate priority. The full run of upcoming games, including this Doncaster clash, is available on our fixtures page, while the current standings show the tight nature of the League One table. Peterborough host Doncaster Rovers at London Road on Saturday, 19 September.
