Peterborough United's central defender Ronnie Edwards is set to join Southampton in a £3million deal. The 21-year-old England youth international will sign a four-year contract with an option for a further year.

What happened?

Southampton reached an agreement in principle with Peterborough United for the signing of Edwards. A fee in the region of £3million plus add-ons and a sell-on clause have been agreed.

Why it matters for Peterborough United

The transfer will see Barnet, Edwards' former club, receive 50 per cent of the profit due to a sell-on clause. Edwards has made 142 appearances for Peterborough United during his four years at the club.

What comes next?

Edwards is undergoing his medical today, July 2. The club is finalising details on the structure of the deal. Southampton are preparing for a return to the Premier League next season after securing promotion via the play-offs last term.
