Bristol Rovers' Winger Search Continues
Bristol Rovers are still on the hunt for a winger to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming League Two season, according to manager Steve Evans. The area remains a priority as the club looks to build on its recent summer signings and improve its performance.
Evans has made it clear that the majority of Bristol Rovers' transfer business is complete, but he left the door open for one more signing in a 'wider area.' This could potentially be a winger. In his latest comments, Evans stated: 'Yeah, no, I think it would probably be a left side. I think we've got Bobby, whose natural preference is to play on the right. And I think we've seen today with one or two bits when we've got Bobby fully sharp, he'll be a real asset to us.'
Current Squad and Future Plans
The club's current options for wingers include Bobby Kamwa, Shaq Forde, and Promise Omochere. However, these players are more comfortable in central areas, making the need for a true winger even more pressing. The likes of Fabrizio Cavegn and Jack Aitchison can also play out wide but are not primarily designed for that role.
Evans has already brought in Keenan Gough and Reiss Russell-Denny to bolster his squad, adding depth to various positions including midfield. He revealed on July 10 that the club was still looking at midfield players as well as 'the wider areas' and even up top. Central midfielder Richie Smallwood, Clinton Mola, Tommy Leigh, Jack Aitchison, and Ryan De Havilland provide strength in that area.
Despite these additions, Bristol Rovers are not in a rush to make any further signings. Evans stated: 'We're not desperate to do something. There's nothing imminent.' He added, 'There's a lot of things I think, Will, the fans have gone away really pleased with in spells where we kept the ball and switched the play. And on another day, if we scored two of the late chances, everyone would have said that's Bristol Rovers from last season, but the difference is today we didn't take the chances.'
The manager’s comments suggest that while Bristol Rovers are not in a rush to make any further signings, they remain open to adding a winger if the right opportunity arises. The club will be closely monitoring the transfer market and player availability as the summer window progresses.
