Peterborough United were soundly beaten 4-1 by Huddersfield Town in a League One fixture on Tuesday night. The heavy defeat ends a two-game unbeaten run and leaves the Posh 19th in the league table with nine points from ten matches.
Huddersfield took the lead after just three minutes. Ilias Bronkhorst was left unmarked to convert Archie Collins's crossed free-kick from close range. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Joe Taylor intercepted a pass on the halfway line, raced clear, and finished past Alex Bass.
Peterborough pulled a goal back almost immediately. Harry Leonard found the bottom corner in the 68th minute, finishing smartly from Danny Ormerod's clever flick. Any hope of a comeback was extinguished just two minutes later, however, as Taylor smashed home his second from Marcus Harness's low cross. Bali Mumba completed the scoring in the 79th minute, cutting inside to finish after a through ball from Derensili Sanches Fernandes.
Match details
Robert William Savage's side enjoyed more possession, 56% to 44%, but were far less clinical. Huddersfield registered six shots on target from 16 attempts, while Peterborough managed only four from 14. The visitors also conceded two early yellow cards, to Lucca Mendonça and Liam Kelly.
The result is a setback after a promising 2-2 draw with Burton Albion and a 3-1 win at Leicester. Peterborough have now conceded 16 goals this season, the joint-third worst record in the division. They sit 11 points behind league leaders Bradford City.
Attention now turns to Saturday's away fixture against Bromley, who are 22nd. Savage made four substitutions at half-time and another three in the second half in an attempt to change the game's momentum, but his side could not recover from the early setback. The manager will be demanding a response from his players after a performance he described as lacking defensive discipline and intensity from the first whistle.
